What is Medical Care?

08/27/2020

Healthcare, health care, or health care is the improvement or management of health through the prevention, detection, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, or recovery of disease, injury, and/or other mental and physical impairments. Healthcare is provided by medical professionals in many allied medical disciplines. There are many areas of medical practice that fall into the healthcare category, including primary care such as family medicine, pediatrician, geriatrics, physical therapy, radiology, dental care, and home medicine. It is important to remember that each type of healthcare has its own characteristics that are separate from one another.

Medical doctors are usually referred to as practitioners (physician). In general, they are trained in medicine. They have a variety of duties, such as treating a person with diseases, disorders, injuries, illnesses, or infections, administering medications, preparing patients for surgery, conducting laboratory tests, diagnosing disorders, prescribing medications, performing physical examinations and lab tests, giving instructions and recommendations, monitoring patients' progress, prescribing treatments, and keeping track of complications. The practitioner may also refer patients to specialists in other areas of medicine.

Healthcare professionals have two main types: direct patient care and indirect patient care. Direct patient care includes giving medication, evaluating the patient's condition, determining the course of action and providing other treatments and supportive care to the patient. Indirect patient care involves managing a patient's health condition and communicating with the patient's family, doctor, and nursing staff. A nurse or other caregiver provides patient care in between the direct care practitioner's visits.

There are several organizations that are devoted to promoting the development of a more coordinated and efficient health care system in various communities. These organizations include national and state-funded organizations such as Medicaid programs and the Medicare and Medicaid programs; private groups such as the American Academy of Family Physicians and the American Academy of Pediatrics; professional bodies such as the American Academy of Physician Assistants; and educational institutions such as schools, colleges, and universities. Many cities have also formed their own hospitals and/areas for the development of a more efficient system of healthcare. Some of these community-based clinics and healthcare programs are called Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) and some offer physician-owned, managed care plans.

There are a number of nonprofit organizations, both governmental and private, that offer community-based services such as medical clinics, nursing homes, hospices, and other health care facilities. There are also hospitals that serve a large population of people, usually in a single geographic area, such as in a rural community. A major difference between a government or for-profit hospital and a government-operated or non-profit hospital is that a government hospital generally is designed to treat a wide range of diseases, whereas a non-profit hospital focuses on treating a single condition.

When caring for patients in a hospital, most healthcare professionals, including nurses, doctors, technicians, pharmacists, and hygienists, provide services such as patient diagnosis and care preparation for hospitalization and treatment. They also help maintain patient records for discharge planning, follow-up care and treatment after hospital discharge. The basic purpose of a hospital setting is to treat patients in an environment that ensures patients can stay comfortable and stay safe.

In addition to healthcare settings, there are many voluntary and independent organizations that provide a range of social services, including domestic violence programs, drug abuse programs, employment and education assistance, drug treatment and rehabilitation, and much more. A number of charitable organizations and special interest groups also provide assistance for people who are facing various difficulties in the delivery of healthcare services to individuals or families.

In summary, healthcare providers perform various roles, such as providing care for a patient's case; ensuring a good hospital environment, such as equipment maintenance and cleanliness; providing care for patients after hospital discharge; maintaining patient records after hospital discharge; ensuring adequate financial and medical resources are made available for the provision of healthcare services; providing services to patients who have been diagnosed with diseases; providing community-based assistance to patients who may have limited or no access to health care services; and providing support to organizations that work towards improving the delivery of healthcare services. While healthcare providers have been a primary source of income for many individuals and families, these services are also a major source of livelihood for many others.
